1984-Winston Smith Essays - Mass Surveillance, British Films
1984-Winston Smith WINSTON SMITH Winston Smith, the main character in the novel 1984, rebels, acts stubborn, and shows braveness against the Party in many ways. The Party is a group who controls the people of Oceania. There are many rules that the people must abide by. If they don't and they get caught, they will be punished. Winston was one of those people who rebelled until he got caught. One of the ways he rebelled against the Party was at the beginning of the novel. Thinking negatively against the Party is a crime. You are supposed to believe what the Party wants you to believe and if you don't, then you are causing a crime. Winston never really believed in the Party and by showing that he didn't he didn't participate the correct way in the Two Minutes Hate. In the Two Minutes Hate, you are shown a type of movie for two minutes which is about the enemy to the Party and you are supposed to cheer against it. Winston just watched the people yell and scream for a while and then he started to join in and realized that The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Winston also acted very brave toward the party. To show his braveness, he dated Julia and wrote bad things against the Party when he knew it was wrong. Winston knew that if he did get caught, he would get punished but he acted brave and did it any ways. Here is an example of his braveness in the novel: His pen had slid voluptuously over the smooth paper, printing in large neat capitals- DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER over and over again, filling half a page. Winston did not only rebel against the Party and act brave, but he also acted stubborn. At the end of the novel, Winston ends up getting caught rebelling against the Party. He was then forced to go to the Ministry of Love. There, O'Brien controlled the torture that Winston had to go through to be brain washed into believing in the Party. Although Winston was tortured very severely, he used his stubborness to last as long as he could before giving in. Here is an example of his stubborness: O'Brien held up his left hand, its back toward Winston with the thumb hidden and the four fingers extended. How many fingers am I holding up, Winston? Four. And if the Party says that it is not four but five-then how many? Four. I think George Orwell used the character of Winston Smith in 1984 to show how easy it is to be brainwashed. Winston used his braveness to rebel against the Party even though he knew he could get caught and then when he did, he used his stubborness to try not to give in to the torture but he ended up failing. After reading my examples, I hope you understand that although he does get caught, Winston is known, by the readers, for his rebellousness, braveness, and stubborness against the Party. Book Reports

How Mountains Form Through Plate Tectonics
How Mountains Form Through Plate Tectonics The Earth is made up of layers of rock and minerals. The surface of the Earth is called the crust. Just below the crust is the upper mantle. The upper mantle, like the crust, is relatively hard and solid.à The crust and upper mantle together are called the lithosphere. While the lithosphere doesnt flow like lava, it can change. This happens when gigantic plates of rock, called tectonic plates, move and shift. Tectonic plates can collide, separate, or slide along one another. When this occurs, the Earths surface experiences earthquakes, volcanoes, and other major events. Orogeny: Mountains Created by Plate Tectonics Orogeny (or-ROJ-eny), or orogenesis, is the building of continental mountains by plate-tectonic processes that squeeze the lithosphere. It may also refer to a specific episode of orogeny during the geologic past. Even though tall mountain peaks from ancient orogenies may erode away, the exposed roots of those ancient mountains show the same orogenic structures that are detected beneath modern mountain ranges.à Plate Tectonics and Orogeny In classical plate tectonics, plates interact in exactly three different ways: they push together (converge), pull apart, or slide past each other. Orogeny is limited to convergent plate interactions- in other words, orogeny occurs when tectonic plates collide.à The long regions of deformed rocks created by orogenies are called orogenic belts, or orogens. In actuality, plate tectonics is not at all that simple. Large areas of the continents can deform in blends of convergent and transform motion, or in diffused ways that do not give distinct borders between plates. Orogens can be bent and altered by later events, or severed by plate breakups. The discovery and analysis of orogens is an important part of historical geology and a way to explore plate-tectonic interactions of the past that do not occur today. Orogenic belts can form from the collision of an oceanic and continental plate or the collision of two continental plates. There are quite a few ongoing orogenies and several ancient ones that have left long-lasting impressions on the Earths surface.à Ongoing Orogeniesà The Mediterranean Ridgeà is the result of the African plate subducting (sliding) underneath the Eurasian plate and other smaller microplates. If it continues, it will eventually form extremely high mountains in the Mediterranean.à The Andean Orogenyà has been occurring for the past 200 million years, although the Andes have only arisen in the past 65 million years. The orogeny is the result of the Nazca plate subducting underneath the South American plate.à The Himalayan Orogenyà started as the Indian subcontinent began moving towards the Asian plate 71 million years ago. The collision between the plates, which is still ongoing, has created the largest landform of the past 500 million years- the combined Tibetan Plateau and Himalayan Mountain range. These landforms, along with the Sierra Nevada range of North America, may have induced a global cooling around 40 million years ago. As more rock is lifted to the surface, more carbon dioxide is sequestered from the atmosphere t o chemically weather it, thus decreasing Earths natural greenhouse effect.à Major Ancient Orogeniesà The Alleghanian Orogenyà (325 million years ago) was the most recent of several major orogenies to help form the Appalachian Mountains. It was the result of a collision between ancestral North America and Africaà and resulted in the supercontinent of Pangea.à The Alpine Orogenyà began in the Late Cenozoic and created mountain chains on the African, Eurasian and Arabian plates. Although the orogeny ceased in Europe within the past few million years, the Alps continue to grow.

The Case Concerning the Pellian Workers Party (PWP) Assignment
The Case Concerning the Pellian Workers Party (PWP) - Assignment Example All the members of PWP are residents of Pell and the group receives financial support from ordinary well wishers, who are Pellians. PWPââ¬â¢s actions are not relate with the state. As such, it is clear that the actions of PWP are not the same as armed attack as contained in the customary international law. Q2. In determining the legitimacy of NAIOS to initiate a joint self-defense against PWP as in Article 5 of NAIOS and Article 51, United Nations Charter, there must be ascertainment that the actions of PWP qualify for armed attack as provided by the two Articles. Looking the case, PWP are just insurgents whose actions are criminal in nature and the scope of their actions remains affairs internal to Pell and Aldor. Therefore, the NAIOS has no mandate to launch military revenge in group self-defense. However, NAIOS can provide Pell and Aldor with assistance to effectively deal with their internal

Management and Leadership Assignment #3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Management and Leadership Assignment #3 - Essay Example In all three perspectives a vital and complex relationship is there between the organization and the environment. In open system perspective organization, structure is a major product. Where in rational and natural system organizational environment structure has little affect on the organizational make-up. In the rational system, an organization structure has specific goals. That is in this form, the king of organization will have well defined organizational hierarchy. Leadership roles are systematically incorporated and each position is well defined. The power of an individual is determined by the position he or she holds. A well defined hierarchy in an organization leads to accomplish goals effectively. In natural system perspective, they focus on the behavioral aspect of an organization, the stated goals of an organization and its real goal. Organizations are considered as social groups and this helps the structure accomplish its stated goals. Individuals hired by an organization will bring with them their own values, interest and abilities and all this will not be ignored when developing the structure. In this kind of organization, they recognize the importance of intelligence and innovation of each worker. In non-rational aspect the organization is not completely controlled by a formal structure and well defined rules. Among the workers some informal structure will develop. In open system perspective the organizational structure focuses on these environments that ultimately shape, support and permeate the organization. The organization will have variety of structures of varying complexity that are determined by verity and complexity of an organization. An organization is viewed thorough a system of interrelated activities, in that some are precisely connected and some are proximately connected. The environment which operates the

Comparison of AWS and Rackspace SLAs
Comparison of AWS and Rackspace SLAs Name: Amulya Gajanan Dudhal Introduction: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Rackspace are the two-leading public cloud service providers of the 21st century. The service level agreement laid down by these companies describes the level of service that can be expected by the user from the cloud service provider. The intention of a service level agreement is to let know the user what he/she will receive from the cloud service provider. The service level agreement is aimed at providing the cloud providers transparency in customer service. There are certain differences in the service level agreements of Rackspace and AWS. The most important factor a user considers when selecting a public cloud service provider is the uptime or the availability guarantee of the cloud service provider. Rackspace claims to have an uptime of 100% while AWS claims to have an availability guarantee of 99.95%. AWSs approach to this is more realistic which provides them with the right to have a downtime of 4.3 hours anytime in a year. In case of network failures, the user always wants to know the MTTR (Mean time to resolve) claimed by the cloud service provider. While AWS decides to not specify the MTTR, Rackspace claims to resolve issues in the time span of 1 hour. If Rackspace fails to resolve the issues in the time period specified, they owe the user credits for network usage as a penalty.Ã This is something that Amazon should include in their SLA. If AWS or Rackspace violates any clause specified by them in the SLA, the user/customer gets the right to notify the companies about the same. After notifying the company the customer must request for the credit from the companies. Amazon has to pay the customer a credit of 10% period while Rackspace owes the customer 100% credit if it vindicated. Also, if the storage service provided by the companies goes down for some time AWS offers 25% credit to the customer while Rackspace again owes the customer 100% credit. Both the companies might want to think about an automated credit function in events of downtime in their service. Also, Rackspace and AWS both provide recommendations to the customer on how the services offered by AWS and Rackspace best suit the customers case. Rackspace also has a flat rate across the multiple availability zones except for UK. Amazon on the other hand does not provide a flat rate across all the availability zones and has slightly higher rates in the UK, just like Rackspace. The foundation of cloud servers is built on shared resources. So, in the case of Rackspace the customer with the bigger Flavor (instance) is given top pri ority in a rack. But in the case of Amazon Web services, the customer gets the services he/she pays for. Variable performance is offered by Rackspace, while dedicated performance is the key feature of AWS. When it comes to storage Rackspace charges a customer with 10 cents/GB of storage, while AWS charges 14 cents/GB up to 1 TB of data storage. Outgoing bandwidth being an important factor, plays a key role in deciding the public cloud service provider for the customer. Rackspace charges the customer with 18 cents/GB. On the other hand, AWS does not charge the customer with a single penny for the first GB of outgoing bandwidth. But, later after the first GB, AWS charges the customer 12 cents/GB up to 1 TB. AWS, clearly is a win-win situation when it comes to outgoing bandwidth. Also, there AWS has key features of spot instances and reserved instances. Rackspace does not have any such feature to offer which can help the user reserve instances for future use with guaranteed performance . Rackspace is ideal for customers looking at services such as uptime, architectural guidance and managed services. But, AWS is more suited for customers looking for commodity capabilities at lowest costs. Amazon also has a separate storage service called as S3. It allows blob storage and retrieval for data from 1 B to 5 TB. Storage SLA of AWS thus covers blob storage and retrieval. Remote disks called as elastic blob store are reserved for EC2 instances. Rackspace on the other hand do not offer any separate storage service SLA. Bibliography: Spada, Stefano. Exploring Cloud Slas: Amazon Vs Rackspace Web Host Industry Review. Web Host Industry Review. Changing Family Values Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research Papers
Changing Family Values "Imagine that, one day in 1960, all radio and television transmissions had been interrupted by a special message from some Cosmic Census Bureau forecaster: 'Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seat belts and hang on to your hats. Over the next twenty-five years, all standard demographic indicators will rise or fall steeply. Divorce rates, rates of mothers' participation in the labor force, and rates of birth outside marriage will double. Birth rates overall will drop. By the end of the 1980s, more than half of your future citizens will be spending at last part of their childhood in a single-parent home. Oh, and by the way, there will be a sexual revolution, to which all are cordially invited.' Who would have believed it?" Imagine that... Imagine a world where people who are completely miserable within the confines of a bad marriage have the freedom to leave. Imagine a world where women -- WOMEN -- women with children -- dare to enjoy a career that gives their life meaning, that reinforces their sense of self-worth and independence. Imagine a world where sex isn't a taboo to be hidden behind bedroom doors in suburban houses where meek wives greet misogynistic husbands at 5 pm with a turkey dinner and a smile. Who could have believed it? Who could have believed it in a world where women had, in all reality, just recently gained the right to vote for their leaders in this country. Who could have believed it in a 1960s America where women stayed home and raised children and when the children were done being raised they just kept on staying home. Who could have believed it in a culture, that even so far ahead of so many others in the world, expected females to serve, and to do so quiet... ...ice. While we're at it, why don't we just re-institute racial segregation in schools and can affirmative action altogether and strengthen immigration laws and ban girls from attending universities. Let's just take a giant step, or two or three or four or a hundred, back and see how much better life is. Let's do it and see how much better our kids turn out. Let's do it and see how long it takes for people to get fed up and want things back the way they used to be. Change is hard, and in a relatively short time, the economic system of this country and the dynamic of the American family has changed drastically. This is bound to produce some negative effects. That is no reason to be up in arms against feminism and against mothers in the workforce. Do your best with your own children, that's all our parents could do, and that's all we can really ask of anyone.
